The 2009 Wild at Art Local Colour theme was inspired by the need to improve promotion, partnership, collaboration and representation of the local arts and cultural talent in the communities of Squamish and area. It was also inspired by the need to make the arts even more accessible to locals and visitors by bringing shows and programming to where people eat, drink and congregate. Wild at Art is looking for a newly composed song that best represents the spirit of Squamish. The winner will receive $1000 and will be scheduled to perform at the festival main stage located at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. *********
Cam Salay has been living and performing in the Sea to Sky corridor since 1988 as a resident of Whistler from 88-98 and a Brackendale resident ever since. In 1993 Cam joined the group The Paperboys and toured North America extensively. In 1998 the band's album Molinos won a Juno award for "best roots and traditional album". Cam left the group in 2000 to spend more time at home and perform locally. He currently plays in a duo with ex-Paperboy fiddler Shannon Saunders. They are a regular fixture a the Dubh Linn Gate pub in Whistler as well as many other pubs, weddings and parties. Cam also performs as a solo artist and in several other combos as a guitar, bass or banjo player. He helps to co-ordinate the Brackendale Bluegrass Festival each year, hosts an open mic night each Monday at the Howe Sound Brew Pub and helps with many other local music projects.
Carolyn’s love of music began when she was very young, singing three-part harmony with her parents on long summer-holiday drives. She has participated in youth church choirs, the UBC Folk Song Society and is currently a member of the Squamish United Church Choir.
For nearly twenty years music was absent from her life, but Carolyn is now reclaiming her love of music with a passion, especially since having the opportunity to perform in Tuned Women in 2004.
Since Tuned Women Carolyn has performed quite regularly for such things as Garibaldi Days, Wild at Art, Copper & Fire at Britannia Beach, the Summer Jam Series downtown, Earth Days at the waterfront, numerous events for the Cedar Valley School, and many other events….
Her enthusiasm for the local music scene has led Carolyn to promote the GrassRoots Jam at the BAG, held the first Sunday of every month at the Brackendale Art Gallery. This is a monthly opportunity for local musicians to get together and make some music and is now quite well attended by both musicians and the general public.
Today, when you think of a local musician, Carolyn’s name is one that comes to mind.
In preparation for the Wild at Art Festival 2009 performance she has put together a full band whose members include:
Jimmy Piche – Lead guitar & vocals
Paul Graham – bass
Louise Martin –recorder
Michael Damgaard – drums
Hillary Wight – violin, keyboard & vocals (unable to attend WAA)
With her genuine and inspiring performance, Dana-Marie transports her listeners to a place of introspection and awe. Whether accompanying herself on piano or guitar, her haunting melodies and stunning voice captivate all within hearing. Her deeply passionate and daring performance combined with her sweet and engaging personality are sure to leave you feeling warm, inspired and wanting more.
Well composed, evocative and with a 'painterly' quality, Joanna's photos capture the essence of landscapes and more. Known for her local landscapes, she has recently experimented with different techniques and more abstract forms.
About her newest piece pictured above she says, “The red antique farm truck inspired me to photograph it in a new way. Using camera motion, I was pleased with the “water colour effect” that captures the dream-like quality of another era. Printed on canvas, the photo feels more like a painting.” Recent shows in the Sea to Sky Corridor include: Wild at Art, Quest University Gala Opening, Metamorphosis Evolution, Art Walk and the Foyer Gallery. Three pieces are on display at Starbucks in the Garibaldi Estates for the month of March.
Joanna grew up in Parksville on Vancouver Island and has made her home in Squamish, BC since 1973. She is a photographer, writer and composer. With a background in music and dance, as well as the literary and visual arts, Joanna brings a wealth of creative experience to her photography.
JOANNA SCHWARZ MUSIC
Mountain, Sea and Sky was inspired by an earlier Squamish Song Contest. "It's all about who we are", Joanna says. "I'm thrilled with the newly arranged choral version. As well, the original solo version that came out in 2003 is familiar to many locals. It includes a 5 1/2 minute DVD/video that compliments my lyrics with footage of the eagles, the spawning salmon, Mt. Garibaldi, the Chief and Shannon Falls".
In another project, teacher, Jean Wilkinson, along with other local teachers has put together an Eagle study for distribution to elementary schools in the corridor. The lesson on "Eagles in Arts and Literature" includes Mountain, Sea and Sky (the solo version). Contact jdwilkin@telus.net
Copies are limited, but you can still order the CD/DVD version directly from Joanna (email only). The cost is $10 plus $2 for postage and handling.
The choral music (plus words) is available through the website: www.joannaschwarz.com
Mountain, Sea & Sky Lyrics and music by Joanna Schwarz Choral Arrangement by Larry Nickel
From the side of a mountain on the west coast of British Columbia, a new sound resonates off the waters of Howe Sound – it’s the voice of Karen Fowlie.
“An upbeat collection of feel-good alt. country / rock songs” describes the original music you’ll hear at Karen’s live shows. Formerly from Alberta, Fowlie is a veteran performer who has given live performances and festival shows since 1997. In 2005, Karen made the move to Sea to Sky country and established herself in the Vancouver scene.
In 2006, Karen was thrilled to work with one of Vancouver’s top producers, Dale Penner (Nickelback, Matthew Good Band, Shawn Hlookoff). Her debut CD “Pushing the Edge” is the result. Now distributed through Adagio Music/Ioda Alliance, it is currently available through iTunes.com and several other online vendors.
Pushing the Edge has had notable success. Over 2007-2008, music from the CD has been added to two compilation CDs: Music BC’s “Make A Case Against Racism”’ and the 2008 Vancouver Artist’s Collective Association (VACA) compilation.
In addition, the single “Happy” was selected to represent music from british columbia in the 2008 Japan Trade mission. Recently Fowlie also obtained national exposure in 7-11 and Wal-Mart stores as Hevy D Popcorn included the single “Tell Me” as a free download in their product. “Tell Me” then went on to garner Karen an accolade from the British Columbia Attorney General.
In this last year, Fowlie was invited back to Vancouver’s New Music West Festival, gave an exclusive concert in the North Vancouver Sunny Sundays Concert Series and headlined the Copper and Fire Festival.
The future is bright for Karen Fowlie. Her newest song, “Christmas Is Tomorrow’” will be included on “A Very Vancouver Christmas” compilation CD where all funds raised are donated to the BC SPCA. To top things off, Fowlie is in the final stages of production for the music video of her single “Tell Me” (release Jan. 2009).
“There are uncharted waters in today’s digital music world”, says Karen. “It’s all about continually adjusting your sails to get where you want to go!”

Lorne Campbell, Guitar
Brian Marchant, Bass
Mike Damguard, Drums
Elizabeth Glover, Vocals
Jane Runnels, Vocals
This original Folk Rock band takes no prisoners when it comes to their music. Songwriter Lorne Campbell writes about the people and things that affect our daily lives. From politics to relationships, from washroom wall humour to the horror of war, there is nothing sacred when Lorne takes a swipe at the human condition.
Radio Karma is built on the strong foundation of three seasoned players, Lorne Campbell on Guitar, Brian Marchant on Bass and Mike Damguard on Drums, all of whom once tried there hand at making music and touring for a living but ended up eating way to much Kraft Dinner on a daily basis. Now older and wiser they’re making better music and eating better as well. With the added strong vocal talents of Liz Glover and Jane Runnals, Radio Karma is in danger of being asked to take this act on the road. Quick…hide the KD
Shone was born in Vancouver in the early 70's but he has spent most of his life in the sea to sky corridor. His musical influences are many and varied, anything from Bryan Adams to Casey and The Sunshine Band, with a little Beatles and Neil Young thrown in for good measure. Shone has been writing music, playing guitar and singing for about 25 years. His talents also include playing harmonica and base guitar. Most of his original music is folk rock. He also plays some blues, jazz and will throw in a bluegrass twist. He has played in festival settings and enjoys entertaining larger audiences as well as playing around a fire with friends and beer. His lyrical influences are a direct reflection of his personal life.
After years of performing as a gutsy folk artist and trying to form a band, Tessa has finally taken matters into her own hands. Embracing her new electro/pop sound, this multi talented artist now combines her guitar, keyboard, drum programming, computer and vocal skills with her love for electro grooves. But don't be fooled by just this one catorgjorization, as it seems this gal can dane to many a different beat - as well as write them!
"An Incredible fiddle player, who blew away the audience with her expertise." - The Celtic Connection
"Delightful, and extremely talented!" - Brackendale Art Gallery
At a young age of 12 years, Jocelyn is a fiddle player with outstanding talent! Having developed musicianship well beyong her years, she performs a full repertoire of fun and lively Celtic music!
First inspired by driving Cape Breton fiddle music only a few years ago (July 2003), Jocelyn now enjoys herown arrangements of traditional and contemporary Canadian Scottish, and Irish tunes.
With fiddle, dance, and song, she averages 75 shows per year, leading The Jocelyn Band with parents and family friend and performing with The Jocelyn Trio, the Vancouver Scottish Fiddles and the North Shore Celtic Ensemble (orchestral youth group).
Travelling extensively (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Washington State, Scotland), music brings Jocelyn to festivals, weddings, and special events as often as possible (including Ottawa/Hull Canada Day Celebration, Owen Sound Celtic Festival, Vancouver CelticFest, BC Highland Games, Whistler Olympics 2010 Countdown, West Vancouver Harmony Arts Festival, Mission Folk Festival, White Rock Spirit-of-the-Sea Festival, and Vancouver BC Early Edition).
Zombie's Locker is the essence of a 'local band'. Built on the exceptional songwriting talents of bass player Todd Mader and lifelong collaboration with drummer Enzo Milia, both lifetime Squamish residents, Zombie's Locker is a relatively new band.
Singer / guitar player Ben Lens of Davy's Locker fame another local favourite has joined the original Zombie's roof band to create...Zombie's Locker!
Ben provides the strong lyrics that compliment Todd and Enzo's musical strengths. Their music makes a statement with classic rock roots and current political themes. All three musicians have enjoyed past industry sucesses and are looking to reviving industry interesteds with this new local line-up.
